Danish truck drivers protest shorter work week

Some 100 Danish truck drivers demonstrated outside parliament in Copenhagen on Tuesday against a new Europe-wide directive blocking them from working more than 48 hours a week.

The drivers, all members of a group called "Det Tavse Flertall 48", or the Silent Majority 48, circled Christianborg Castle, the seat of parliament with their trucks in protest against the new EU rule, which they claimed would significantly reduce their pay checks.

"We are used to working up to 60 hours a week without putting motorists at risk," protest spokesman Allan Christiansen told reporters, as demonstrators waved banners saying "No to the loss of our liberty".
