The result of Austria's national election today is too close to call, with Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel's People's Party and Alfred Gusenbauer's Social Democrats neck-and-neck, first estimates after the vote show.

Schuessel's party won 35.3 percent of the votes or 68 seats, according to an estimate by national broadcaster ORF published as voting ended at 5 p.m. today. The Social Democrats took 35.8 percent or 69 seats, according to ORF. The Freedom Party won 10.5 percent of the vote or 20 seats while the Greens won 9.8 percent or 18 seats.

The Alliance for Austria's Future, the party of anti- immigrant politician Joerg Haider and Schuessel's current coalition partner, won 4.2 percent and gained 8 seats in Parliament, according to the ORF estimates.
