The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science
Um livro que promete: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science, de Tom Bethell.• There’s no evidence that more than a handful of people in the Middle Ages believed the Earth was flat. The claim that Christopher Columbus disproved the flat Earth was invented by the creator of Rip van Winkle.
• Copernicus was never persecuted for saying that the Earth went around the sun. The idea of a “warfare” between Science and Religion was invented by 19th century Americans.
• It is said that 25 million Africans have HIV/AIDS. What they don’t tell you is that in 1985 AIDS was redefined in Africa so that it could be diagnosed without an HIV test. Thenceforth diseases common in Africa could be called AIDS.
• What Nelson Mandela doesn’t want you to know: Water and sanitation infrastructure in Africa collapsed after colonial rule came to an end. Public health followed suit.
• Endangered species? Not! New, hitherto unknown species have been discovered more frequently than known species have disappeared. Scientists keep finding—alive—species thought to have gone extinct.
