EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said Tuesday that he hoped China would curb cheap textile exports to the European Union in order to preserve its long-term business interests in the region.

"I passed the message along to the Chinese authorities. I asked them to place their own restrictions on their exports," Mandelson told the French newspaper Le Monde. "China has great responsibility for this matter. It has long-term interests that should prevail over short-term advantages. I think the message got through."
