Putin sends a shiver through Europe

Russia took Europe to the brink of a winter energy crisis yesterday when it carried out a Cold War-style threat and halted gas deliveries to Ukraine, the main conduit for exports to the West.

...Moscow turned off the tap at 10am after Ukraine refused to sign a new contract with the Russian state monopoly Gazprom quadrupling prices.

Critics of the Kremlin say the rise was punishment for the Orange Revolution in 2004 which brought in a westward-leaning government that promised to remove Ukraine from the Kremlin's sphere of influence.

Os países Árabes fizeram algo semelhante em 1973. Mas estas manobras político-energéticas acabaram por ser contra-produtivas. O aumento do 'risco político' contribuiu para o desenvolvimento de motores mais eficientes do ponto de vista energético, para a o aumento da competitividade de outras fontes de petróleo e para o investimento acrescido em 'energias alternativas'.

Em Portugal, o projecto do gás natural foi em parte justificado como uma forma de diversificar o risco. Neste momento, a energia nuclear começa a parecer uma alternativa mais segura.
